To shampoo a carpet, vacuum it and treat the stains first. Then go over it slowly with a carpet cleaner. Use only as much soap as the label says. Rinse with plain water, pull up as much water as you can, and let fans dry it.

What you need

  • A carpet cleaner

This machine sprays soapy water into the carpet and sucks the dirty water back up. You can rent one for about $30 to $50 a day. Or buy one for $100 to $400.

  • A good vacuum

Shampoo works best when the loose dirt, hair and crumbs are gone first.

  • Carpet shampoo

Use the shampoo your manual names. Look for the seal from the Carpet and Rug Institute. It means the soap passed their tests.

  • A spot cleaner

An enzyme spray is best for pet messes. It breaks down the mess and the smell.

  • White towels

Use them to blot stains. White towels will not leave dye on your carpet.

  • Fans

Fans and open windows help the carpet dry fast, so it does not smell or grow mold.

How to shampoo your carpet

  1. Clear the room and vacuum

Move out what you can. Then vacuum slowly, once up and down and once side to side. This lifts the carpet and pulls out loose dirt.

  2. Treat the stains

Spray spot cleaner on each stain and wait as long as the label says. Then blot it with a white towel. Do not rub, or the stain can spread.

  3. Test a hidden spot

Try the shampoo in a closet or under a chair first. Let it dry. Make sure the color does not run or fade.

  4. Use less soap than you think

Fill the tank with water and add only the soap the label says. Too much soap leaves a sticky film on the carpet. That film grabs new dirt, so the carpet looks dirty again fast.

  5. Shampoo in slow rows

Start at the far wall and work toward the door. Push the machine slowly as it sprays. Then pull it back with the spray off to suck up the water. Let each row touch the last one, and go over very dirty spots twice.

  6. Rinse, then pull up the water

Fill the tank with plain water and go over the carpet again. This rinses out the soap. Then make two or three more passes with the spray off. The less water you leave, the faster it dries.

  7. Let it dry

Run fans, open the windows or turn on the air. It can take up to a day to dry. Stay off it until then, and keep furniture off it too. When it is dry, vacuum once more to fluff it up.
